Sacrament of Penance III is a temporary public art installation and participatory performance that turned a historical telephone booth in Berlin’s Charlottenburg (now functioning as a community bookshelf) into a temporary confessional, installing a telephone inside: Penitents were invited to confess their sins over the phone and engage in a private phone conversation with a group of invited artists (stationed in an office building not so far away from the booth) .

For season III of Sacrament of Penance, we invited three strangers whom we met online and through an organization; we were specifically looking for people who have spent a considerable time in prison or jail, for their “wrongdoing,” which, by the way, are defined and determined by federal administration, bureaucracy, and law— not synonymous with the voice of people who construct the society.

We believe that individuals who have faced adversity in their lives can be great teachers with tremendous insights on forgiveness.
