The Sacrament of Penance III

SoPIII invites formerly incarcerated members of the public as artists to lead a semi-public confessional performance at a repurposed telephone booth. Visitors make an anonymous call to the artists and confess their sins. The artists answer the calls, listen to confessed sins, and assign performance homework based on wisdom gained from their life experiences. 

We believe that individuals who have faced adversity in their lives can be great teachers capable of bringing perspectives that can move the public— with tremendous insight and wisdom to guilt, remorse, and forgiveness. 

In this work, we centre them as agents of knowledge and wisdom, redefining the conventional social hierarchy and proposing a new source of light for us to move forward. 

All calls are strictly confidential, and every participating artist signs a contract forbidding them to disclose any received confessions.
