The Sacrament of Penance II is an interactive performance in collaboration with Gatekeepers (Pförtner), gatekeeping the sins of the art school and becoming the first Gatekeeper artists in Germany.
Gatekeepers are always near art students but rarely participate in the school’s art activities; some wish to engage with students by striking up conversations, sharing jokes, or offering sweets. During slow hours, they draw, read, write, or daydream.
For the performance occasion, the gatekeepers took phone calls from participants/penitents who confessed their sins to them in confidentiality. In return, the gatekeeper artists listened and responded with words of wisdom and assigned a performance task for the penitent to do, in order for their sins to be forgiven.
This performance is part of An Experimental Ecology. Art practice in the dialogue of disciplines at the UdK Berlin 50th anniversary special event.
